About Me

Amidst a freezing winter blizzard in the town of Lyons, Colorado, Angus Oakes was born kicking and screaming; an accurate reflection of his early childhood as well. Growing up living the small town life, Angus found close friendships and outdoor activity an integral part of his early years, and a passion for dance ignited a creative spark in his mind. Through its intricate yet intense movement and visual appeal, the hip-hop style of dance captured his interest from a young age and stuck with him ever since. Throughout elementary and middle school, dance became a major focus for Angus, and continuing on into the first year of high school, placements on a competitive and performing team solidified his dedication to the performing art. Dance, to Angus, is more than just cardio exercise and the thrill of competing. His outlook focuses on the freedom of expression dance offers, and the ability to convey deeper emotions and feelings simply though unique movements of the body. The experimentation of movement in dance continues to amaze Angus, and inspires him to dive beneath the surface of motion as a form of art.

Angus’ participation in art, however, did not exceed beyond dance until a unique experience changed his worldview. For 6 months in 2017, Angus, along with his mother and father, lived in Hong Kong, an entirely different scene than the small town he was used to. Isolation from long time friends and a traditional high school life left Angus developing values for quietness and tranquility despite the loud environment Hong Kong is known for. There, Angus found inspiration to become a visual artistーa different media style of animation and illustration that explores human emotions and interactions Hong Kong left him with. Although art is a relatively new scene for Angus, his imagination and excitement has only strengthened; His love for dance and visual art now combines into one. Hong Kong changed not only Angus’ worldview, but fundamentally changed his perception of art. The realization that different forms of media do not necessarily differ the meaning and message a piece sets forth allowed him to combine his love for both dance and visual art. Angus Oakes’ style, philosophical interpretations, and messages uniquely distinguish his work.  He looks forward to a creative career incorporating both of these art forms.
